CaThy Carter

Cathy Carter is a photographic artist, based in Grey Lynn, Auckland. Her art is inspired by concerns about climate change and our evolving relationship with bodies of water as we enter the Anthropocene. My art practice explores bodies of water as physical, cultural, and unique environmental ‘landscapes’ and investigates our complex psychological relationship to water through different perspectives and geographical locations.

Carter is a graduate of AUT University with a Master of Art and Design (Hons) 2013.  A finalist this year in the international HeadOn Landscape Prize. A four-times finalist in the Wallace Art Awards (2018, 2017, 2016 and 2014), and the international HeadOn Portrait Prize (2018, 2016 and 2015). She was a finalist in the 2018, 2017, 2016 Walker and Hall Waiheke Art Prize. Carter’s work has been exhibited in Auckland, Wellington, Taranaki, Hawkes Bay, Sydney, Paris, Sczcecin Poland, Cincinnati Ohio and New York City and her work is held in many collections including The Wallace Arts Trust, The Parliament Art Collection and The Fisher Trust.

Through the use of intimate perspective she seeks to embody seeing as an experience rather than solely as observation. As spaces of isolation and destabilization, the bodies of water depicted in her work offer sensuous and psychologically-compelling encounters, and explore human vulnerability in these environments, as well as the vulnerability of our oceans and waterways at this time in history.
